The company transports large amounts of raw materials and products every year, which requires seamlessly functioning logistics. The international business has found a working solution for streamlining its logistic processes by modernizing and unifying the scales and connecting them to the digital mScales weighing solution.
Modernized vehicle scales connected to mScales
Nordkalk Sweden had a lot of old scales and weighing equipment from different suppliers. Because weighing is playing very significant role in Nordkalk’s operations, reliability and durability are the most important features required of a vehicle scale. The condition of Nordkalk’s vehicle scales was fully mapped by Tamtron (former Lahti Precision) engineers and plan was made to modernize the scales, electronics and sensor technology to the required level. During the project that started in 2019, we modernized Nordkalk’s scale systems, and connected about 20 vehicle scales to the mScales weighing service and further to Nordkalk’s operational control system.
Thanks to the modernization, the short life cycle scale equipment, such as receipt printers, remote readers, sensors and local PCs, were able to be removed “from the field”. Now they are replaced by mobile user interface carried by the driver. At the same time, manual work and maintenance costs associated with short-life equipment were minimized.
The mScales system makes logistics effortless
Before the introduction of the service, Nordkalk used several different logistic systems at its various locations. mScales digital service have helped the company unify its business practices while also providing new data about the customers, suppliers and the company itself. The digital weighing service can be integrated with company ERP/CRM system and it seamlessly shares data for invoicing, supply chain and customers. Special attention has been paid to weighing codes, which has made logistics management much easier. Drivers can now easily, safely and independently pick up and load the delivery using the pickup code.
“The mScales system allows us to use weighing codes. Every transport and individual delivery go through a weighing code. When the driver arrives at the scale, he uses the pickup code for specific customer and specific delivery,” says logistics manager Carl Johan Salomonsson.
An easy and usable weighing service benefits all parties
The solution improves the safety of logistics, as the weighing codes allow drivers to check the correctness of materials and delivery times to customers. Nordkalk’s employees have also been satisfied with the well-functioning digital service and its benefits, which are clearly visible in their everyday work. The system is as easy to use on the field as it is remotely from the home office. All important documents are conveniently stored in one place, from electronic weighing documents to transport documents with electronic signatures. The service also enables the production of an electronic transfer document. Nordkalk’s own employees and external suppliers are already smoothly using the mScales weighing service.
“It’s very easy to visit the scale, because the product and the vehicle are weighed, driven to the factory, loaded and taken out. For weighing events, we use weighing codes that drivers receive before they drive to the scale. All drivers have experienced the system very simple and user-friendly. I recommend the mScales weighing service because it is simple and easy to use for all its users and partners,” sums up Salomonsson.
Service contract brings accuracy, reliability and a longer life cycle
There are plenty of moving parts and different things to consider in an internationally operating company. It is important that the company can focus on its core business and does not have to focus its own resources to the maintenance of scales.
Carelessness is guaranteed with Tamtron’s service and maintenance contract, with which yearly maintenance operations, statutory inspections and certifications and their scheduling are taken care of experts of Tamtron. In this model, the customer does not have to worry himself that the actions affecting the scale’s reliability, accuracy and life cycle will be completed on time. The maintenance service enables Nordkalk not only to have a comprehensive and uninterrupted operation, but also to have a continuous supply of spare parts in their use when needed. The condition of the weighing equipment and possible problems can also be checked remotely via software.
With one scale and weighing equipment supplier the possible questions or problems related to the scales can be solved with one single phone call.
